Familiar items from our kitchens help to scent stale clothes

Gardeners and holiday home owners who do not use their properties over the winter will tell me that the musty smell that pervades their property in spring is a big problem. Even with frequent ventilation, this smell settles not only on books and walls, but also on furniture and clothing.

Removing musty smells from clothes

You find that after a normal wash, the smell still lingers on your items. Not every detergent can remove it. Your clothes will be fresh and fragrant again in no time, with the right detergents.

What not to do

Don’t try to cover up the smell. This seems the easiest solution. Get a strongly perfumed cleaner, and use that on your laundry. The result may not be permanent, as it will only cover the smell, which may reappear after a while. If the clothes smell of mould, which they certainly do, we need to remove the problem.

Do not use fabric softener, as the residue of fabric softener in your clothes can create new mould in a damp environment.

Facilities that help

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar will do you a great service when done correctly.

Remove the clothes from the locker and wash the inside with vinegar water. Leave the cupboard open to allow for better ventilation. Put the removed clothes in the washing machine and pour a large glass of vinegar. Let the washing cycle run like this. Do not add anything else.

In this case, vinegar acts as a powerful antibacterial agent and mould has almost no chance against it.

Next we will need a cup of baking soda to add to the laundry in the washing machine that has already been washed in vinegar water. Again, we will not use any other detergent. The baking soda here acts as an odor neutralizer.

It remains to proceed to the last step, and that is drying the laundry. Your laundry will smell fresh when you dry it outside in sunny weather.

If your laundry smells musty without you knowing the cause, your washing machine could be the culprit. It’s not uncommon, and it can happen occasionally. Try cleaning your washing machine and you might get rid of the problem.

Owners of holiday properties that use them mainly in the summer months will appreciate the option of carrying out spraying. The application can be carried out in the presence of both humans and animals. Spraying is also affordable and after its application, musty odours are removed and the overall air in the property is remediated.
